Prestige Points

As characters encounter and overcome challenges, they grow in knowledge, confidence and reputation. The game uses the concept of Prestige Points to track and record the magnitude of their characters’ accomplishments to date, as well as provide a way to incrementally upgrade the custom development of the character. These two expressions of a character’s reputation and experience are recorded as two types: total prestige points and active prestige points.
Total Prestige Points
In the course of excelling in the game, total prestige points record the total number of prestige points the character has accrued to date. Total prestige points are a sort of gauge of how widespread one’s reputation has become, and the amount of respect (or enmity) the character should expect from the Galaxy. Even if active prestige points are expended, a character’s total points can never be reduced. Total prestige points act as a qualifying marker for rank, types of command commissions, and the number of ships able to serve under the PCs command. The table below relates these aspects:
Active Prestige Points
Prestige points awarded to a character are available to the PC in enriching themselves or the world around them. In this way, prestige points (pp) can be allocated to a variety of options. Improvements listed as points per “grade,” are available for purchase but cost in multiples bases on the level of upgrade. For instance, a +1 bonus in Gunnery Optics costs 10 pp where +2 Gunnery Optics would cost 20 pp. All +1 bonuses must be purchased prior to acquiring +2 or higher bonuses.
Prestige Points are awarded by the GM at the conclusion of every Chapter. The amount of Prestige Points awarded to players comes at the sole discretion of the GM, and should reflect the challenges overcome during the course of play, in terms of both quantity and quality of gameplay. The awarded amounts should be in balance with the relative efforts of the character’s performance, and care should be taken to prevent characters from escalating skills and powers, thus unbalancing the game. The current method of awarding Prestige Points begins with a baseline of two (2) PPs per post, as an order of magnitude. Beyond this baseline, the GM may award supplemental awards in the areas (categories) of Problem Solving, Combat, and Role Playing. Award amounts in each of these categories range from 25-100 Prestige Points. The award of supplemental PPs is not mandatory. The following graphically describes the current method.
